The UNM School of Law is one of the highest-ranked schools in terms of student diversity. This makes its student community extremely vibrant. In addition to creating a cosmopolitan and dynamic environment for its student community, the school is also committed to giving students a high-quality and comprehensive legal education. With a focus on one-on-one student-teacher interactions, UNM Law ensures students receive hands-on legal education on par with other top legal schools in the country.

UNM Law offers a J.D. degree in addition to a Master of Studies in Law (MSL) degree. The J.D. program is geared toward giving students experiential and practical learning and offers opportunities to learn outside of the classroom, too. UNM Law’s Clinical Program is by far one of the most interesting in the country, where students get to practice law in the real world supervised by tenured faculty. It is no wonder the clinical program here is ranked 8th in the country by U.S. News & World Report. Students can choose to participate in one of five clinical programs:

  • Community Lawyering Clinic
  • Child and Family Justice Clinic
  • Economic Justice Clinic
  • Natural Resources and Environmental Law Clinic
  • Southwest Indian Law Clinic

The first year is dedicated to imparting core legal concepts that are fundamental to any lawyer’s professional practice. This includes papers on Contracts, Criminal Law, Torts, Civil Procedure, Property Law, and Constitutional Law. The second year is devoted to research and real-world practice in clinical programs.
