MCAT Physics Question — Circuits

The circuit shown below consists of a capacitor, resistor, and battery with a switch that completes the circuit.

When the switch connects A to B, which of the following describes the conversion of energy that occurs as current flows through the circuit?

 MCAT physics sample questions

A.    Chemical to potential to thermal

B.    Chemical to electrical to thermal

C.    Electrical to chemical to thermal

D.    Potential to kinetic to electrical

Click for Explanation

When the switch connects node A to B, the circuit consists of a battery in series with a resistor. Batteries store chemical energy, which is converted to electrical energy as current flows through the circuit. At the resistor, the electrical energy is converted to thermal energy making B the correct answer.
