Dartmouth College Geisel School of Medicine

The Geisel School of Medicine is a premier institute of higher learning in the US. It ranks 36th among medical schools nationwide in primary care and 47th in research, according to a U.S. News review. Established in 1797 by graduate physician Nathan Smith, it’s one of only seven Ivy League medical schools in the country. It occupies pride of place alongside other renowned medical schools like those at Columbia, Harvard, and Yale. 

As the fourth oldest medical school in the US, the Geisel School has been home to several medical milestones over the centuries, including the first clinical X-ray in 1896. Today, it is a leading institute known worldwide for its cutting-edge research. The learning climate combines the best of classroom teaching with health policy analysis and advanced practical applications like clinical trials. 

The Geisel School offers both MD and Ph.D. degrees. It also offers a joint MD program that combines an MD with an MBA, Master of Public Health (MPH), or Master of Science (MS) degree. 

In their first year, MD students learn the fundamentals of biomedical and health sciences, human anatomy and functions, health care delivery, and clinical care. The second year is devoted to pathophysiology, the interdisciplinary MD program in basic medical sciences, and continuing clinical practice training. Third-year students must complete a clerkship in six eight-week medical clerkships in core medical disciplines. In the fourth and final year, students at Geisel School must complete two more clerkships, a four-week advanced sub-internship, and 12 weeks on elective subjects. Fourth-year learning is mainly devoted to priming students for their post-grad residencies.

The academic calendar at Geisel is peppered with several annual events, the first of which is the White Coat Ceremony where new medical students receive their first white coat. Another important event is the Transition Ceremony, which marks a student’s movement from preclinical studies in the first two years to the clinical disciplines of the last two. First and second-year academics at Geisel also include community service modules, besides a host of activities conducted by the various medical student organizations and special interest groups on campus. 

The Geisel School has 836 full-time faculty and a faculty-to-student ratio of 2.2:1. Each year, it receives approximately 7,000 applications from students, mostly from outside New Hampshire, who compete for an average of 90 available seats.
