The William S. Boyd School of Law offers a Juris Doctor program that can be completed in three years. Alternatively, it also offers a part-time four-year program. The early years focus on essential core legal studies classes in civil procedure, criminal law, constitutional law, legal writing, contracts, property, and torts. These courses focus on giving students a strong foundation in both theory and practice. The final two years are dedicated to specific areas of study based on individual students’ interests. These areas include labor, environment, immigration, taxation, and others. 

The school focuses heavily on its Nevada law students gaining hands-on experience in the wider legal community. It has an in-house legal clinic called the Thomas & Mack Legal Clinic where every student gains practical experience by representing clients. In addition, students are encouraged to apply for “externships” or practical learning opportunities with federal and state judiciary, government and public service agencies, the Nevada Legislature, and the U.S. Congress. The school also collaborates with the Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada on the Partners in Pro Bono program where students are matched with well-respected attorneys to work on cases ranging from divorce, child custody, trade practices, and consumer fraud.
