We are in the dog days of summer (as I was reminded during my sweltering walk to work this morning), which can only mean one thing: the Fall 2018 LSAT is just around the corner. If you’ve already succumbed to the enervating affect of this heat wave and failed to sign up for an LSAT prep class, there’s still time to act.
As we discussed last week, a number of LSAT classes just started over this last weekend. If you sign up now, you can get up to speed without much effort at all. Prep classes are a great way to keep yourself accountable, to build a steady study schedule, and to receive personal attention on any areas of weakness.
So, why scramble to take one before the September LSAT? Well, timing is everything. Law school admissions take place on a rolling, first-come, first-served basis. Consequently, the earlier you apply, the more seats are available. Generally, an “early” application is sent before Thanksgiving. Taking the September LSAT is the last opportunity to receive your score and finalize your application packet if you want to be in the early wave. If you justified waiting on a class because there’s a November LSAT, that’s fine, but I would consider rethinking that position.
As an additional benefit, taking the September LSAT gives you the backup plan of taking the November LSAT, in case things do go according to plan. The same cannot be said of the November LSAT, if you want to apply this cycle. The next test administration date is in January 2019, which means you wouldn’t receive your score until February. Any application, at that point, would be considered late in the cycle, and your chances of receiving an offer of admission (or a financial aid package) would diminish.
In sum, the September LSAT gives you the benefit of taking advantage of the best time to apply (if things go well) and gives you the flexibility of taking the November LSAT and still applying in a timely fashion (if things don’t go so well). This is the last chance to enroll in a prep class that will allow you to capitalize on these benefits.
