Your Complete Guide to the PANCE Topic List

You’ve embarked on the journey to becoming a certified physician assistant (PA), a thrilling adventure that culminates in taking the ultimate test, the Physician Assistant National Certifying Exam (PANCE). It’s the last hurdle that remains before you capture the coveted prize of becoming a certified PA! 🏆

Luckily, there’s something that’ll help you navigate the final leg of your journey: the PANCE content blueprint. Picture this as your treasure map, guiding you through the vast landscape of medical knowledge you must acquire to successfully complete your quest!

In this guide, we’ll delve into the key aspects of the PANCE topic list, its significance in guiding your study approach, the topics it encompasses, and strategies for adequate preparation. Let’s begin!

What is the PANCE content blueprint?

The PANCE content blueprint is a comprehensive outline that delineates the topics and subtopics assessed on the exam. Developed by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA), the blueprint serves as a roadmap for candidates, outlining the core medical knowledge and skills essential for practice as a PA.

Think of it as the ultimate study guide, providing a structured framework that ensures the exam remains relevant to current medical practices and reflects the evolving landscape of healthcare.

How often is the PANCE blueprint updated, and is it relevant to my PANCE prep?

The PANCE content blueprint undergoes periodic review and updates, typically every couple of years, to align with advances in medical science, changes in healthcare delivery, and emerging areas of importance in the field. This ensures the exam remains valid and reliable and reflects contemporary medical practice.

Each PA program uses this blueprint to map their curriculum so that students are prepared to pass the exam when they graduate. You can use the blueprint to organize your study efforts and prioritize areas of highest relevance. By aligning your preparation with the content outline, you can maximize your study time and thoroughly cover essential topics.

The most recent update to the PANCE blueprint was in 2025! You can find more details about what changed in this post: Everything to Know About the New NCCPA PANCE Blueprint

Which topics are covered on the PANCE?

There are two topic categories on the PANCE: the medical content categories and the task categories. Let’s explore their distributions as outlined in the latest version of the PANCE blueprint.

Medical Content Categories

Think of the following as the outline for every topic you learned about in your PA program! (The exact topics in each category can be downloaded from the NCCPA website.)

Here’s the medical content category breakdown:

Cardiovascular system11%
Dermatologic system4%
Endocrine system6%
Eyes, ears, nose, and throat6%
Gastrointestinal system/nutrition8%
Genitourinary system4%
Hematologic system5%
Infectious diseases7%
Musculoskeletal system8%
Neurologic system7%
Psychiatry/behavioral science7%
Pulmonary system9%
Renal system5%
Reproductive system7%
Professional practice*6%

Task Categories

These are the fundamental knowledge and skills needed to perform tasks when treating patients.

Here’s the task category breakdown:

History taking and performing physical examinations16%
Using diagnostic and laboratory studies10%
Formulating the most likely diagnosis18%
Health maintenance, patient education, and preventative measures11%
Clinical intervention16%
Pharmaceutical therapeutics15%
Applying foundational scientific concepts8%
Professional practice*6%

*From NCCPA: Medical content comprises 94% of the exam. All medical content questions are also coded to one of the task areas, with the exception of the Professional Practice category. Questions related to professional practice issues comprise 6% of the exam (described on pp. 20-21). Some questions on the exam will cover surgical topics (8% to 10%), and some will focus on conditions in pediatric patients (12% to 15%). The specific percentage allocations may vary slightly on exams.

And here’s the fun part: the medical field is constantly evolving, leveling up with improved practices and technologies, so certified PAs swoop in to update the blueprint. They team up with the NCCPA to keep things fresh by conducting profession-wide practice analysis studies. Certified PAs are behind the scenes, updating the exam by creating new questions, critiquing exam performance data, and suggesting passing standards.

Understanding the distribution of topics allows you to plan your study efforts, ensuring comprehensive coverage of content areas weighted more heavily on the exam.

How do you incorporate the PANCE blueprint into your studying?

Using the PANCE blueprint effectively involves a strategic study approach that aligns with the outlined content areas and their respective weights.

One valuable resource for PANCE preparation is the Blueprint PA (formerly Rosh Review) PANCE Qbank, which offers a comprehensive repository of practice questions designed to mirror the format and content of the exam. You can identify your strengths and weaknesses across different content areas by utilizing performance analytics provided by platforms like Blueprint, enabling targeted remediation and focused study efforts.

Pro-tip: study what you prefer to avoid studying first! These are the topics that were probably most difficult to master in school and they’re probably the topics you’re least looking forward to revisiting. Start with those!

Creating practice exams through the Blueprint PANCE Qbank that include the content you’re least comfortable with is a great way to target your most significant knowledge gaps and learning deficits.

Do you still have to study topics that likely won’t appear on the PANCE?

While the PANCE content blueprint guides the distribution of topics and their relative importance, be careful when choosing what topics to focus on most heavily.

While it’s prudent to prioritize topics that are heavily weighted on the exam, overlooking less emphasized areas entirely may lead to gaps in knowledge and impact your readiness for clinical practice. Proficiency across a broad spectrum of medical topics is essential to being a competent PA.

Our profession is founded on versatility and a broad knowledge base. Therefore, while you may allocate more time and resources to high-yield topics, you should strive for a well-rounded understanding of core medical concepts to ensure readiness for the diverse challenges you may encounter in clinical settings.

Final Thoughts on the PANCE Topic List

In conclusion, mastering your upcoming exam requires a comprehensive understanding of the PANCE topic list, strategic study planning, and resources tailored to exam preparation.

By leveraging the guidance provided by the blueprint, incorporating targeted study strategies (including plenty of practice questions), and embracing a holistic approach to learning, candidates can enhance their readiness and confidence as they reach a pivotal moment in their quest to become a certified physician assistant.

Good luck on the PANCE, and in the next chapter of your PA journey!
