Most students enjoy their obstetrics and gynecology rotation because it offers a unique mix of surgery, clinic, and labor and delivery wards. However, for these same reasons, the obstetrics and gynecology NBME subject exam can be challenging. The following resources can help you prepare for this exam.
The 5 Best Step 2 Resources to Use on Your ObGyn Rotation
1. UWorld and ACOG/APGO question banks
Like for every rotation, UWorld is a top-notch resource. Aim to complete all the questions and consider repeating them or at least re-doing your incorrect questions prior to the self. An additional question bank is available through the American College of Gynecology, but you must receive access through your home institution.
2. High-Yield Obstetrics and Gynecology by Emlar Sakala
High-Yield Obstetrics and Gynecology by Elmar Sakala is an excellent high-yield review book and a quick read. Aim to get through this book within the first week or two of the rotation and consider re-reading it in the week leading up to the shelf.
3. Case Files Obstetrics and Gynecology
Don’t miss Case Files Obstetrics and Gynecology! This is a great review resource with 60 high-yield cases and questions. It is a quick read, but be cautious as some of the screening guidelines may be outdated.
4. Blueprints Obstetrics and Gynecology
Blueprints Obstetrics and Gynecology is a great reference but is very in-depth. Definitely worth the read if you are going into obstetrics and gynecology or if you have a longer rotation. Otherwise, it may be better used as a reference to review high-yield topics or subjects you find more difficult.
5. NBME subject exams
Aim to complete at least 1 of NBME subject exam before your shelf exam. They perfectly simulate your shelf exam and allow you to experience the interface and range of questions. Up to 4 practice exams are available for $20 each.
But my ObGyn rotation is a short one. Which of Step 2 resources are absolutely essential?
If your rotation is only 4 to 6 weeks, focus on reviewing UWorld, reading High-Yield Obstetrics and Gynecology, taking 1 or 2 NBME practice exams, and skimming select chapters in Blueprints.
For longer rotations or those interested in pursuing obstetrics and gynecology, consider adding case-files or a more in-depth review of Blueprints.
The obstetrics and gynecology subject exam can be challenging, but there are a number of excellent resources to help you prepare.
