  • The cost of medical school can be a significant barrier that leaves students with substantial debt that can take years to repay. The average cost of medical school is about $235,827 for four years, including tuition and fees. Unsurprisingly, scholarships for medical school are a rare and invaluable opportunity for aspiring medical students.

Scholarships, especially full-ride scholarships for medical school, can open doors for a range of talented premeds who might not otherwise be able to pursue a medical career. By covering tuition, room and board, and, in many cases, living expenses, full-ride scholarships enable students to focus wholly on their education and training.

This support is crucial in fostering a healthcare workforce that is skilled, diverse, and empathetic. This article explores some of the top US medical schools known for offering full-ride or full-tuition scholarships.

General Overview of Scholarships for Medical School

There are two main sources of medical school scholarships: institutional and outside scholarships. Outside scholarships—like Blueprint MCAT’s $20,000 Medical School Scholarship Giveaway—are managed by a company or entity often not affiliated with the medical school.

On the other hand, medical schools also offer scholarships and grants to their accepted students. Criteria for eligibility will vary, but many are awarded based on merit—i.e. high GPA and competitive MCAT score.

Finally, we can’t forget about tuition-free medical schools, such as Kaiser Permanente School of Medicine, New York University, and Albert Einstein College of Medicine. These schools cover their students’ full tuition, regardless of merit or financial need.
