Want Everyone to Like You? Buy a Tractor.
Q: How can you tell when a lawyer is lying?
A: His lips are moving.
We know that the legal profession is the butt of many (admittedly bad) jokes. That’s ok; if you’re working towards a law career you’re probably prepared to take the ribbing. But maybe the jokes aren’t all just a joke? According to a newly released Gallup poll, only 25% of Americans have a positive view of the legal profession (i.e. 75% of people think lawyers smell). The annual Work and Education poll asked participants to rate each of 25 major businesses and industries as positive, negative, or neutral. Only three industries were rated lower than law: real estate (24% positive), automotive (24%) and oil and gas (21%). The legal fields’ rating has actually decreased in the last two years; falling 1 percentage point this year and 5 points from the year before. Luckily, the numbers are still not as bad as in 2002 when the legal field was the lowest rated industry with an impressive 22% positive rating. Filling in the top spots in this years’ poll was the computer industry (62% positive), followed by restaurants (57%) and farming (56%).
