Diagramming Practice – Artists

Diagram the following conditional statement and find its contrapositive: “The only true artists are the ones who suffer for their work.”

Answer

“The only” is a bit of a tricky phrase for diagramming.  “Only” by itself indicates a necessary condition, but “the only” actually indicates a sufficient condition.  So, “true artists” is sufficient and “suffer for their work” is necessary.
