Flaw Practice – Casting a Movie

Identify the flaw in the argument: “The producers did not cast Meryl Streep for this movie and they also did not cast Viola Davis. So, they must have cast Helen Mirren.”

Answer

This is an exclusivity flaw. While we definitely agree that this is a list of three absolute legends, the problem with the argument is that it never tells us that one of the three had to be cast in the movie. So, as far as we know, the producers could have cast Tilda Swinton or Michelle Yeoh or Jon Bon Jovi instead. The point is, the argument failed to establish that the list of three actors was exhaustive. So, it committed an exclusivity fallacy.
